General Electric
General electric is one of those companies that is so well known that it goes by its initials more commonly than its full name. Once recognized by most consumers for their lightbulbs and large home appliances, GE has retreated from retail sales in recent decades.
It remains one of the most diversified conglomerates in the world, manufacturing a huge range of industrial equipment and machines. Today, GE is probably best known for their jet engines and other aerospace products, but they also write much of the software that controls our power grid, oil and gas refineries and manufacturing plants.
