Another marketing tool we created at Essilor’s request was an app to help opticians to calculate their overall revenues and profits. This is a more daunting proposition than it first appears, given that many of the products opticians sell are paid for—in whole or in part— by various medical insurance providers.
We came up with an app employing a simple and appealing interface. After entering the numbers and types of products sold in past years, as well as the parameters of the different insurers, the retailer uses sliders to change the proportions of their payer mix and the types of eyeglasses they are covering. The calculator does the rest, outputting the store’s profits.
With this tool, retailers can better plan where to concentrate their marketing efforts. The math behind the calculator is straightforward. The main challenge for us was to come up with an interface that is easy to use and produces clear results—which just happens to be our specialty.
